When you look at the landscape of different industries you can choose to start a company in, few stand as tall as Esports. It’s truly amazing the explosion that is happening right in front of our eyes. NFL owners are buying $20,000,000 (yes $20 million) OverWatch franchises, top DOTA 2 teams are earning millions of dollars in prize money, and more people are watching major Esports events than are watching the Super Bowl!
These are the arenas top level competitions take place in
For me, it’s a really easy fit. I grew up gaming. I used to play Tecmo Super Bowl against my brother. He was a bit older than me so I didn’t quite yet understand football in general, but I vividly remember getting PISSED when he would use unlimited turbo cheat codes and run around the entire field. Mike Tyson’s Punchout, Star Fox, F-Zero, Zelda, GOLDENEYE, Madden, FIFA, and Counter-Strike are just a smidgen of the games I remember playing (and some of those I still play today). I have a long term relationship with gaming so generating passion for the industry is not a struggle for me in the least.
Bo Knows!
But why would someone else not quite as passionate as me be interested in Esports? Aside from the staggering amount of money flowing towards the industry or the fact that viewership numbers are approaching billions, I see it as a growing industry that doesn’t have enough infrastructure. At the least, the existing infrastructure is extremely fragmented and there is yet to be a truly dominant force. By infrastructure, what I really mean is services to support the industry. If you think of the “hotel” industry, you can probably think of 5–10 MAJOR PLAYERS in that space that offer really cool/useful services right? You aren’t a hotel expert, yet you know of those companies. In Esports, that’s not really the case. There is yet to be the “household” name that transcends the industry itself.
Knowing that I’ve got the opportunity to continue to build something in this space gets me pumped up and I’m looking forward to the future.
